I’m doing great! Today was our last day of school, I brought cake for everyone and said a few words even though I got really sad and began to cry. And tonight I’m headed to Copenhagen with some friends of mine, one of them Astrid who I’ve really wanted to party with in Copenhagen for awhile now :) So I’m excited, and there is something called distortion in Copenhagen tonight. Gooooogle it! Have a good weekend!
I’m in Køge, which is 45 minutes south of Copenhagen. I have friends that live close to where you’ll be living next year, in fåborg! :) I’m positive you’ll love it!!
Today, I experienced something I’ve never experienced before. It is something called sidste skoledag- which translates to the last school day in english. Although my last day is on the 1st of June (next Friday) the 3rd year’s last day was today. 3rd year is what we would call seniors in the U.S. I’m only in the 2nd year, so we were just watching and playing our part today. Since people that aren’t Danish don’t really know what happens on such a day, I guess I’ll share since I’ve now experienced it!
The day started off pretty normal, besides the fact that there were tons of 3rd year students dressed up in all sorts of funny costumes. The point of the day is for them to enjoy their last day at the school. There is a sort of Danish tradition where the 3rd year students get to throw toffee at the first and second year students. And I mean THROW.. as in, it gets dangerous. Our first class was totally normal, the 3rd year students were preparing for it. As our second class started, 3rd year students kept running past the door to our classroom, ducking their heads in, and chucking things at us. It’s kind of a funny tradition, but I mean, we got candy for free which I guess is okay :) After that, the school looks absolutely a mess. We must have had over 200 toffee pieces in our room alone. Crazy! Anyways, then we went outside and saw a soccer game- some of the teachers against some of the 3rd year students (mostly boys).
After the soccer game, we went inside and went into the auditorium to see a sort of show they put on for us. The show was the top 12 things that have happened or been great about Køge Gymnasium during the students time at the school. The 12 things were pretty funny, but it was so freaking hot in the auditorium with so many people in such a little space!
Then we went to our last class, and did basically nothing. As the last class was finished, most of the people from the school head to a park nearby in town called lovparken. On Fridays after school when it’s nice weather (during the fall and spring), students go to lovparken after school and drink beer and hang out. This time, it was a little different. I didn’t have any beer, since I have school tomorrow. But the point of lovparken on sidste skoledag is for all the 3rd years to just go after eachother with shaving cream and gross things and just smash it in eachothers faces and bodies and all that. It’s kind of like a war with really nasty things. Needless to say, it was really really fun. Of course people I know came at me with shaving cream, and I came home smelling like shaving cream and totally white. But I’m really happy I experienced it, and think we should have something like that in America. It makes me sad for all these things to be happening, because I know school is coming to an end. 6 more days left at Køge Gymnasium for me.
